Business magnate, investor and philanthropist George Soros was born in August, 1930 in Budapest, Hungary. In 1947 he fled Hungary during the Nazi occupation and made his way to London. In 1992 George Soros became known as ‘The Man Who Broke the Bank of England’ when he made a billion dollars by short selling the British pound on Black Wednesday during the United Kingdom’s currency crisis. He is said to have been helped by Karl Popper’s General Theory of Reflexivity which he has used for guidance in shorting and swapping stock. A well-known supporter of American liberal and progressive political causes, he donated $11 billion to a variety of philanthropic causes and organizations between 1979 and 2011. Soros moved to the U.S. in 1956 and took a job with F.M. Mayer’s brokerage house as an arbitrage trader for 3 years. He then worked with Wertheim & Co. as a European Securities analyst from 1959 to 1963. From 1963 until 1973 he was a vice president at Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder. While there he started his first hedge fund, Double Eagle, in 1969 and his second, Soros Fund Management in 1970. By 1973 Soros’ Double Eagle Fund contained about $12 and he was on his way. George Soros has been married three times and he has five children. The three children from his first marriage are Robert, Andrea and Jonathon. The two children born to his second wife are Alexander and Gregory.
In 1993 George Soros founded the philanthropic organization the Open Society Foundation. Through this organization he provides financial support for a wide variety of causes and organizations all over the world. The organization’s mission is to advance public health, education, justice and independent media.
